On October 16, 1991, Suzanna Gratia Hupp experienced the tragic shooting at Luby’s Cafeteria in Killeen, Texas, where 23 people, including her parents, were killed. Ironically, she had chosen not to carry a small revolver in her purse that day due to fears of jeopardizing her chiropractor’s license if caught with a weapon. In her autobiography, she details her journey from a small-town chiropractor to a prominent figure advocating for the right to armed self-defense. Her emergence as a well-known gun-rights activist began with her passionate advocacy for citizens' rights to carry firearms for self-protection, thrusting her into the center of the gun control debate.
Hupp consistently testified against the effectiveness of gun control laws, believing that they disarmed law-abiding citizens and left them vulnerable to criminals who disregarded the law. Her stance on gun legislation led to a successful tenure in the Texas House of Representatives, where she served for ten years. In addition to fighting for Second Amendment and privacy rights, she was a member of various caucuses including the House Rural and Veterans and Military Affairs Caucuses. Hupp also held key leadership positions within the House, serving as Chair of the House Select Committee on Child Welfare and Foster Care, as well as Chair of the Human Services Committee.
